Proposition Bet Tips — How to Read the Center of the Table

The center of the craps table is staffed by the stickman, who calls the proposition bets and oversees payouts for the crew. Knowing how to read the center layout and call your bets correctly makes the game faster and ensures you get paid the right amount.

How to Place Prop Bets

Proposition bets are placed through the stickman — not by reaching across the table yourself. Toss your chips toward the center and say clearly what you want: "dollar Yo," "two dollar Any Craps," "four dollar Horn." The stickman places the bet in the correct position and confirms the amount. If you are not sure it is in the right spot, ask.

Calling Proposition Bets Correctly

  • Yo = the 11. Always called "Yo" to avoid confusion with "seven" in a loud casino.
  • Snake Eyes = the 2. Also called "Aces."
  • Boxcars = the 12. Also called "Midnight" at some casinos.
  • Ace Deuce = the 3.
  • Any Craps = 2, 3, or 12 on this roll.
  • Any Seven or "Big Red" = the 7 on this roll.

One-Roll Bets vs. Standing Bets

Most proposition bets are one-roll bets — they win or lose on the very next roll and are then off. Hard ways are an exception and stand until the hard number hits, the 7 rolls, or you call them off. When the stickman announces "one roll" for a bet you placed, that is normal — it means it resolves on the next roll only.
